Aion with The Coalition

So first off I know that you guys already have a thread up about Aion, but I wanted to kick off a new one to talk about the group I'm putting together in The Coalition for this game.

We already have about 12-15 people that have been playing during Closed Beta at one point or another. They're all from various different groups within The Coalition. If anyone is interested at all in this game we'd love to have you. Just come by www.coalitiongaming.com and say hi. Also if anyone has any questions about this game I can answer just about anything anyone would need to know about it, so feel free to post here or PM me here or on the Coalition forums.

Finally for those of you who have no idea what Aion is about here's a real quick breakdown. Aion is an MMORPG developed by NCsoft that has already been out for a year in Korea and is getting ready to release here in the US. Despite this it doesn't play like the standard Korean MMO, in fact it plays much more similarly to MMO's out here in the US. The release here will be a blank slate for all the North American players, so you won't immediately be inferior to other players.

The game's endgame is completely based on PvP, and takin keeps in the Abyss. There are other forms of PvP but it is extremely well implemented and doesn't feel like games like AoC or WoW at all in the way it's presented. Here's a pair of videos that show the large scale PvP at endgame:

Essentially anything you see with wings in that, aside from the one 40ft tall guy with white wings, is a player. The battles get extremely large as you can see, but there is lots of room for individual 6 man groups as well.

Anyways, there's far more good I could say about Aion, but I know you guys hate long posts. Let me just end by saying that myself, Zee, and a good number of Coalition members have already been having a ton of fun playing and that was only in beta. The game is going into open beta shortly, which can be accessed simply by dropping $5 on a pre-order box at GameStop, and then will release on Sept 22nd. This game is nothing like what I expected. I joined the closed beta just in time for the last event and wow, it is truly a great game.

The graphics, the playstyle and the way the game took great ideas from all the other games that came before it is just super.

I for one will be playing this game as it is what WAR should of been.

Also, ya you're right, Hippo, it is yet another fantasy setting for an MMORPG, but I gotta say it's probably the best implementation of it I've ever seen. Although it may seem slightly minor, it is enough of a deviation from the standard "Tolkien'esque" fantasy setting that it feels new.

Agreed. Great game in it's first year or so.

Things I have not seen done well in other MMO's:
- Placing your own homes/cities/harvesters
- non-fighting classes, just gave the game a whole community/MMO feeling. yes there are non-fighting classes in stuff like WoW but it's all secondary.
- the game didn't feel all EQ like (with elves and magic powers)
- Along the lines of placeing your own homes... placing a house then turning it into a store.

That in my opinion was a true MMORPG and I still wait for someother game to build upon it.

Heh funny you should mention that, I've been giving Ambient screenies from Closed Beta so that he can open a "Sig Shop" on the AionSource boards himself.

What do you think of the classes? I play a rogue in WoW so naturally I was leaning towards an assassin.. stabbing people in the back just seems to fit me. Gladiators look fun too, they all look interesting actually.

I haven't tried Assassin myself yet. I've been through Ranger, Templar, Sorceror, and Chanter pretty extensively so far. From what I've seen of Assassin's though they are pretty damn good. In PvP they pretty much revolve around what you just said, stabbing people in the back. They pop out of stealth, viciously murder a guy, and then try to survive long enough to get back into stealth.

Gladiators shine in group PvP because a large number of their attacks are AoE. They do really good DPS with them too, and they have that plate armor to keep them up too which is nice. The only reason I, personally, have not as interested in them is because I know from the people I play with that we already have at least 3 Gladiators. Also, from reading on the AionSource forums, it's likely that they will be a large percentage of the players at endgame too.

I like the Rangers in Aion. As far as endgame PvP they have the single highest burst damage chain in the game. Played correctly they can kill anything short of a Templar (tank) with just that chain, but they have to be careful cause they can't take a whole lot of damage at all.

In PvE well, they aren't very high in sustained DPS, but they do well when leveling since they can burst most normal mobs down before they ever get to them. They have traps that are useful for more damage or snares and other various debuffs.

The real thing to remember though is that they are a primarily ranged damaged class in a game with the ability to fly. Being able to attack things from 40ft in the air is a huge advantage to them. It doesn't hurt that aerial combat is alot of fun and looks cool as hell too. ;)

You should really hop by the Coalition boards man (http://www.coalitiongaming.org/forum/index.php). I've been discussing this a bit already over there.

Really I'm still up in the air on which faction to use. My personal tastes leans towards the Elyos, both because of the look of them and their lands. Also because the Asmodians seem to be the most popular of the two races, and I tend to prefer the underdog to an extent.

I have a few reasons to go Asmo though as well. First off I've already got friends there, Voide and AC have at least 10 people hopelessly addicted to this game as well and will be playing Asmodians. Also I don't disagree that some of their stuff does look cooler than the Elyos ones, and lets not forget their fucking eyes glow red in combat :P

What I'm going to do with Contempt, The Coalition's Legion in Aion, is play Asmodian through the Open Beta. We already did Elyos through Closed Beta. After that, about a week before release, I'm gonna probably leave it up to a vote, although popular choice won't be the only deciding factor.

So ya that's a long way of me saying I like the Elyos, but we dunno which side we're playing yet ;)

You would like the priest classes as they feel like a paladin and druid mixed together. For tanking the Templar is simply amazing and it can have a two handed sword for pretty good damage. The ranger you would hate, it is the hunter from wow minus the ability to sustain dps and it has mana.

It doesn’t necessarily revolve around PvP, there are actually quite a few endgame instances to run as well. The main thing is that there are no PvE raids at all. The only raiding done in the game is Fortress Raids which are generally controlled by either the Elyos or Asmodians.

Ok, the combat system, while not reinventing the wheel, does flow really well. The game is f’ing beautiful, possibly the best looking MMORPG out there. The endgame PvP bears a closer resemblance to L2 and works far better than AoC or WAR. There is no raiding outside of the Abyss (mass contested zone between the 2 factions). Crafting system is very fun, if a little grindy, but it gives a legitimate break from leveling. Leveling isn’t the grindfest you’d expect from a Korean made MMO, in fact it’s probably the perfect middle ground between Eastern and Western styles. Great Lore, I honestly really love the story for the game and the dev team takes it seriously too. Unlike most launch games we’ve had Korea and China playing the game for over a year now to weed out all the bugs for US release.

If all of that doesn’t help at all then it may not be for you. Oh and you can fly… it is a benefit in my opinion. I’m beginning to feel like I’ve been selling this game for months! :P

Solo PvE sure, if that's what you want to do. It's viable, but also harder obviously.

Solo PvP... you can do it, but I wouldn't reccommend it.

Im a level 10 ranger now and I find the combat to be really clunky as well as trying to move around with my mouse (I keybind everything and dont keyboard turn). Game is beautiful and the quest log is an improvement. People afking setting up shops everywhere is highly irritating though.

The game pre-level 10 is a tutorial and should not be used to gage the game. Post-lvl 10 is where it becomes fun. But as a ranger you wont start seing your power until mid 20s.
