status update:
AV just curious if you could throw some insight about the game out here :D
i was looking into it, supposed to be similar to SWG. more advanced travel wise (EVE-ish) but not sure on the professions and how all that is similar to SWG.
hook it up brotha!

Actually does a good job summing the game up.
In my own words....
1) Your only choice at the start is Federation - you can pick from a few established races, or even make your own from scratch! There are different traits you can pick from that slightly improve your character (resistant to knockdowns, better accuracy with space weapons, etc). Once you hit level 6, you can then make a Klingon - which is primarily for PvP, at least at this point in the game. Its a lot like LOTRO in that respect, if any of you played that.
2) You have basically 3 characters in the game - your ground-based avatar, your ship, and your bridge officers. All three level up and have different skill trees. You have an inventory for all of them, so you'll be upgrading the weapons/armor/shields/etc on everything.
3) Combat - this game is 99% about it... which is very un-Star Trek like. The ground combat isn't very fluid, and is pretty lacking. Pretty much all of the fights play out the same. But the space combat is better and is more tactical, like changing power levels or putting more to your front/rear/left/right shields or making sure your ship is turned right (weapons have different firing arcs). But it is VERY slow - thank god they cut out most of the combat in the TV series and movies...
4) Missions. Except for the story-advancing missions, they are all pretty much the same. Warp into system, kill bad guys, beam down to planet/ship/station and kill more (usually to rescue someone or gather something), then beam back to ship to find more bad guys to blow up, win. It is fun for a while, but it gets kinda boring after a while.
5) Professions - if you mean like in WoW where you can make shit... well, this game has ZERO professions. There is a kinda crafting I guess - you scan anomalies and get artifacts or samples, that you trade for better gear or for things that upgrade your gear/player. But you won't be building your own phasers or shielding systems. Oh, and you can "craft" your starship to a degree I suppose, but that is really only for looks.
TBH, I'd wait on this game. I didn't play Champions Online, but from what I gather from other STO testers that did play, once CO came out, all the dev work focused on STO. So if Cryptic has another project to work on, they might abandon STO the same way.
Also, there was a shit load of server issues the last week of testing. They might be gone now (not sure how many testers actually bought the game and will play it), but I'm gonna wait a month or so and see if this game is still alive and getting attention. I got a couple friends that bought it and will be playing, so I'll ask them later how it is.

thanks AV :D
definitely will not be gettin into this now lol
I am about rdy to throw in the towel for MMOs...look at this trainwreck I have wasted money on and almost did again apparently wiith STO.
Tabula Rasa(shut down, Age of Conan(combat mechanics still fun), Pirates Online(whatefver it was called), DarkFall(sold account phew) Warhammer(gave it 35 lvls...was ok...), Champions Online(super stoked, IP is lame and game is shallow as hell, but some good foundation).
I think I might have forgotten one but that is well over $300 wasted, not to mention sub fees. I had a few good memories but jeezus, when an MMO should last you years, these all fell short.
I have just learned to stick with FPS/Sports games, focus on online play versus real opponents.
